MAU VC Dismisses Professor’s ₦4m Salary Underpayment Claim

MAU VC Dismisses Professor’s ₦4m Salary Underpayment Claim

Modibbo Adama University Vice-Chancellor, Ibrahim Umar has refuted allegations from Professor Martins Fabunmi regarding a salary underpayment totaling over N4 million

Professor Fabunmi, who held a one-year contract in the Department of Education Foundations, claimed the university violated his agreement by failing to pay his full monthly salary, withholding teaching practice honorariums, and making improper deductions for housing and pensions.

Following these disputes, Fabunmi chose not to extend his tenure and sought a refund for the missing funds.

In his defense, the Vice-Chancellor explained that the perceived shortfall was actually the result of a deliberate 2025 management policy that set contract staff pay at 60% of the standard rate.

Umar argued that Fabunmi was placed on the correct pay scale and had legally consented to these terms by signing his appointment letter.

He also highlighted that the university had supported the professor by providing complimentary housing and utilities throughout his stay.

The university administration maintains that the salary adjustments were applied consistently to all contract employees, meaning Fabunmi was not singled out or underpaid.

The Vice-Chancellor expressed disappointment that the professor chose to publicize the dispute rather than using formal grievance procedures like the University Council or the Federal Complaints Commission.
