Atiku Mourns oveross of Lives in Gone Boat Tragedy

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed deep sorrow following a tragic boat accident in Yobe State that has resulted in a significant loss of lives.
In a statement released on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, Atiku described the incident as “heartbreaking” and a painful reminder of the dangers faced by many Nigerians who rely on water transportation.
He extended his heartfelt condolences to the families who lost loved ones and offered prayers for the strength and hope of those whose relatives are still missing.
The former Vice President also commended the efforts of emergency responders and local volunteers who have been working tirelessly in the rescue and recovery operations.
He noted that the accident, which claimed at least 29 lives, underscores an urgent need for the government to prioritize safety on Nigeria’s inland waterways.
Atiku specifically called for stricter regulations, better infrastructure, and the mandatory use of life jackets to prevent such avoidable tragedies in the future.
The disaster occurred on the Yobe River in Garbi town, Nguru Local Government Area, when a boat carrying over 50 passengers—mostly farmers and traders—capsized while traveling from Jigawa State.
Authorities have identified overloading and structural defects as the likely causes of the mishap.
