Former Senate Leader Abdallah Wali Dumps PDP After Decades in Party

A former Senate Majority Leader, Senator Abdallah Wali, has withdrawn from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending his long association with the party.
His resignation was conveyed in a letter dated December 31, 2025, addressed to the PDP chairman of Sayanna Ward in Tambuwal Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
In the letter, Wali stated that he was leaving the PDP and all its structures with immediate effect.
While announcing his exit, he expressed gratitude to the party for giving him opportunities to serve at different levels and acknowledged the support of party members over the years.
The former lawmaker also thanked his supporters for standing by him throughout his political journey, noting that he would always value the moments shared during more than 25 years of political engagement aimed at national development.
Wali was the PDP’s governorship candidate in Sokoto State during the 2015 election. He previously served as Minister of the National Planning Commission and deputy chairman of the commission under former President Olusegun Obasanjo and later as Nigeria’s ambassador to Morocco during the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
His resignation comes amid a wave of defections that has further weakened opposition parties.
Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang recently joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), following a similar move by Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
With reports that Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf may also defect soon, the APC is set to expand its control to as many as 29 states, deepening concerns over the shrinking influence of opposition parties nationwide.
