One Dead, Five Trapped in Kebbi Rice Mill Collapse

Tragedy struck in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, early Tuesday morning as a section of a private rice mill collapsed, claiming the life of one worker and leaving five others trapped under the debris.

The incident occurred at the NIA‑AGRI rice processing facility around 2:00 a.m., according to preliminary reports from engineers and emergency personnel on site.

The sole confirmed fatality was identified as a staff member caught in the collapse. Emergency teams, including the Kebbi State Fire Service and other government rescue units, have been working through the night to extricate the trapped workers safely. State authorities and local leaders are closely supervising the operation to ensure all necessary resources are deployed.

The Deputy Governor of Kebbi State visited the scene to assess the situation, expressing deep sympathy to the family of the deceased and pledging continued support for the rescue mission. Officials have assured the public that once the rescue efforts are concluded, a thorough investigation into the cause of the structural failure will be conducted.

As of the latest updates, the focus remains on safely retrieving the five workers still trapped in the wreckage, while ensuring the surrounding area is secure to prevent further incidents. Residents and employees at the facility have been advised to cooperate with emergency responders and avoid the affected sections of the mill.

The incident highlights ongoing concerns about industrial safety standards and the need for strict adherence to construction and operational protocols in processing facilities across the region.
