Lagos State Cancels 2025 Greater Lagos Fiesta, Urges Residents to Spend Time in Prayer
The Lagos State Government has announced the cancellation of the 2025 Greater Lagos Fiesta, the state’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration, urging residents to spend the time in personal and collective prayers for peace, prosperity, and unity.
In a statement released by the Governor’s office, citizens were advised to refrain from attending large gatherings, concerts, and fireworks displays traditionally associated with the Greater Lagos Fiesta. Instead, Lagosians are encouraged to reflect, pray, and focus on spiritual well-being as the state and the nation prepare to enter 2026.
The Greater Lagos Fiesta, a hallmark of the state’s cultural calendar, typically features live performances, countdown events, and celebrations that draw thousands of residents and visitors from across the country. This year’s cancellation, coming just hours before the scheduled festivities, represents a significant shift in approach to the year-end celebrations.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu expressed optimism about the year ahead, extending well wishes for a peaceful and prosperous 2026 to all residents. He emphasized the importance of unity, personal reflection, and prayers as Lagos continues to pursue development goals and improved welfare for its citizens.
While no specific reasons beyond the call for prayer and reflection were given, the decision signals a focus on introspection and spiritual observance over public revelry.
Authorities have assured residents that safety and public order remain top priorities during the New Year period, and they encouraged communities to celebrate responsibly within homes and private spaces.
The cancellation marks a departure from previous years when the Greater Lagos Fiesta served as one of the largest and most anticipated public events in the country, highlighting a new approach by the state government in balancing tradition, safety, and spiritual engagement.
