Power Supply Fully Restored After National Grid Collapse, NISO Confirms
Electricity supply across Nigeria has been restored following a national grid collapse that left homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure without power earlier this week, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has confirmed.
The disturbance caused a sudden drop in electricity generation and distribution, leaving many regions with little to no power.
Some areas recorded near-zero electricity supply, plunging millions of consumers into darkness and highlighting ongoing challenges in maintaining a stable national grid.
NISO said the collapse was triggered by the loss of several generation units and key transmission lines, which created a cascading effect across the network.
In response, the operator immediately activated its emergency protocols, coordinating with generating plants and transmission operators to stabilise the system.
Island mode generation and other corrective measures were deployed to prevent further outages and restore supply.
Within hours, electricity began returning to affected homes and businesses. By the evening, NISO reported that power had been fully restored nationwide, marking the successful recovery of the grid.
The operator emphasised that investigations into the precise causes of the collapse are ongoing and pledged to implement findings to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents in the future.
The event underscores the vulnerability of Nigeria’s electricity system, which relies heavily on gas-fired generation and is sensitive to disruptions in supply and transmission infrastructure.
While the restoration is a relief to consumers and businesses, analysts note that the grid requires continued investment, stronger infrastructure, and improved operational resilience to prevent recurring outages.
NISO has assured the public of its commitment to strengthening the power system and delivering more reliable electricity in the coming months.
