FG Confirms January 1, 2026 Takeoff Date for New Tax Laws
The Federal Government has reaffirmed that the newly enacted tax laws will come into force as scheduled on January 1, 2026, dismissing speculations about a possible suspension or reversal of the reforms.
In a statement issued by the Presidency on Monday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu said the tax measures already in effect since June 26, 2025, alongside those billed to commence in 2026, remain firmly on course.
He described the reforms as a historic opportunity to lay a strong, equitable, and competitive fiscal framework for the country.
According to the President, the new tax regime is not aimed at imposing additional tax burdens on citizens but at restructuring the system to ensure better coordination, efficiency, and fairness, while reinforcing the social contract between the government and the people.
President Tinubu acknowledged ongoing public discussions and concerns over certain provisions of the recently passed tax laws.
However, he noted that no major issues have been identified that would justify halting or disrupting the reform process.
He stressed that confidence in governance is built through consistent and well-considered decisions rather than hasty reactions to public pressure.
The President also reiterated his administration’s commitment to due process and respect for the rule of law, assuring that all enacted legislation would be implemented with integrity.
The Presidency further pledged continued collaboration with the National Assembly to promptly address and resolve any concerns that may arise during implementation.
President Tinubu assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remains focused on protecting the public interest and delivering a tax system capable of promoting economic growth, shared responsibility, and national prosperity.
The statement was signed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on December 30, 2025.
