Abia Govt Moves to Revive Aba Textile Mills, Promises Job Creation

The Abia State Government has announced plans to revive the moribund Aba Textile Mills as part of its strategy to boost industrial growth and create employment opportunities for residents.

Governor Alex Otti disclosed that negotiations are ongoing with a Lebanese company and other foreign investors to revitalize the factory, which was once a key player in Aba’s textile industry. The revival is aimed at restoring the city’s status as a major manufacturing hub in southeastern Nigeria.

Speaking on the initiative, Governor Otti emphasized that reviving struggling industries is central to tackling unemployment, enhancing economic security, and providing youths with viable economic opportunities.

“The revival of Aba Textile Mills is part of a broader plan to reposition our strategic industries and create jobs,” Otti said. “We are committed to attracting investors and ensuring that these industries contribute meaningfully to the state’s economy.”

The government’s plans also include efforts to resuscitate other moribund industries, including glass and metallurgical plants, Star Paper Mill, and others, with the goal of stimulating local supply chains and supporting small and medium enterprises.

Economic analysts note that if fully implemented, the revival of Aba Textile Mills could create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, attract further investment, and strengthen Aba’s industrial ecosystem.

The announcement was made during the 2025 Ngwa Day celebration , but the government has not provided a specific date for when the mill will be fully operational, stating that the project is currently in the negotiation and planning phase.

The move marks a renewed push by the Abia State Government to restore the state’s industrial heritage and provide practical solutions to youth unemployment and economic stagnation.
