Using Nigeria as Health Insurance”: Sowore Claims Tinubu, Akpabio are Gravely Ill
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has alleged that President Bola Tinubu is currently "unwell" and merely managing his health, which he claims is the real reason for the President’s sudden departure to Europe on Sunday, December 28, 2025.
In a scathing post on X (formerly Twitter), Sowore questioned why Nigeria continues to be led by individuals facing significant health challenges. He also raised the alarm over the condition of Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, whom he described as "practically dying." While acknowledging that illness is a human reality. Sowore criticized the leadership, stating, "It is callous to use a country as health insurance for sick leaders." The Presidency, however, has maintained a different narrative regarding the trip. In a statement issued by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, it was explained that President Tinubu departed Lagos to continue his end-of-year break in Europe. Following this, he is scheduled for an official visit to the United Arab Emirates to attend the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) Summit in early January, at the invitation of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Sowore’s allegations come amidst a backdrop of persistent health rumors surrounding the nation’s top leadership. Just weeks prior, the Senate had directed the National Security Adviser to investigate "fake news" regarding Akpabio’s purported collapse and death. As the President prepares to head to the UAE, the contrast between official diplomatic schedules and the claims of opposition figures continues to fuel public debate over the transparency of the leaders' medical status.
