Police Recover Firearm After Suspect Flees Public Event in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has recovered a cut-to-size single-barrelled firearm from a fleeing male suspect at a public gathering in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of the state.

The recovery was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday in Enugu by the command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe.

He disclosed that the incident occurred on December 26, 2025, during routine security surveillance by police operatives attached to the Igbo-Eze South Police Division.

According to Ndukwe, the operatives were on patrol around the Jimoh Rauf Badamosi (JRB) Mini Stadium, Ibagwa-Aka, when they noticed a man behaving suspiciously while holding a black polythene bag.

“On sighting the operatives, the suspect abandoned the bag and fled the scene before he could be apprehended,” the police spokesperson said.

He explained that the abandoned bag was immediately recovered and searched by the operatives, leading to the discovery of a cut-to-size single-barrelled gun concealed inside.

Ndukwe added that efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest the suspect, as well as to determine his intentions and whether he was acting alone or as part of a criminal network.

The police spokesperson reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining law and order across the state, particularly during public events and festive periods, when large gatherings are common.

He also urged residents to remain vigilant and to promptly report any suspicious movements or persons to the nearest police station, assuring the public that the Enugu State Police Command would continue to intensify patrols and intelligence-led operations to prevent crime and ensure public safety.
