VP Shettima Visits Victims of Maiduguri Mosque Blast, Vows Justice for Perpetrators
Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Maiduguri on Thursday to commiserate with victims of the tragic Christmas Eve bomb blast at the Gamboru Market Mosque.
The explosion, which occurred during evening prayers on Wednesday, December 24, claimed the lives of at least five worshippers and left over 35 others injured.
Security reports suggest the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber, marking one of the most significant security breaches in the state capital in recent months.
During his visit to the Borno State Specialist Hospital, the Vice President moved from ward to ward, meeting with survivors receiving treatment for varying degrees of injuries.
He conveyed the personal sympathies of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government, emphasizing that the administration stands firmly with the people of Borno.
“The Federal Government will not tolerate any attempt to undermine the peace and security of our nation,” Shettima stated. “Our security agencies are working round the clock to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous crime are brought to justice immediately.”
In response to the attack, the Vice President confirmed that President Tinubu has ordered an immediate intensification of security operations across the state.
Additional tactical teams are being deployed to the North East to track down those responsible and prevent further incursions.
Accompanied by state officials, the Vice President assured the families of the deceased and the injured that the government would continue to provide the necessary support for their recovery and welfare.
The Borno State Police Command and the military’s Operation Hadin Kai have cordoned off the Gamboru Market area. Preliminary investigations, including the recovery of fragments from a suicide vest, point toward insurgent groups active in the region.
Despite the tragedy, Shettima maintained that the incident would not break the nation’s resolve. He praised the resilience of the residents and the swift response of emergency teams and security personnel who managed the scene.
