Nigeria Affirms Continued Security Collaboration with U.S. After Northwest Airstrikes
The Federal Government has confirmed that Nigeria maintains active security and intelligence cooperation with the United States following recent American airstrikes on terrorist locations in the North West region of the country.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government said the operations were the result of ongoing collaboration with international partners aimed at tackling terrorism and violent extremism threatening national and regional stability.
According to the ministry, the partnership with the United States involves coordinated intelligence sharing, strategic planning and other forms of support carried out in line with international law and long-standing bilateral agreements. The ministry noted that these engagements respect Nigeria’s sovereignty while advancing shared security objectives.
The statement explained that the cooperation has enabled targeted military actions against terrorist elements operating in parts of northern Nigeria, adding that such measures are intended to weaken extremist networks and reduce their capacity to carry out attacks.
The government emphasized that protecting civilians remains central to all counterterrorism efforts, stressing that violence directed at any group—regardless of religion or ethnic background—runs contrary to Nigeria’s values and poses a threat to global peace. It further stated that authorities are working with partners to dismantle terrorist funding channels, disrupt logistics and prevent cross-border movements, while simultaneously strengthening domestic security and intelligence structures.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured that Nigeria will continue to engage its international allies through established diplomatic and security frameworks and pledged to keep the public updated through official communication channels.
