Kano Stakeholders Endorse Tinubu for Second Term, Back Barau for 2027 Governorship
Political stakeholders in Kano State have formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in office ahead of the 2027 general elections, while also backing Senator Barau I. Jibrin as their preferred candidate for the Kano State governorship.
The announcement came during a gathering of influential All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders, party chieftains, and grassroots representatives in the state, who cited Tinubu’s national leadership, policies, and development agenda as reasons for their support.
The stakeholders emphasized the importance of continuity at the federal level to sustain the gains of the current administration.
At the state level, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, currently serving as Deputy President of the Senate, received widespread backing from stakeholders as the APC’s candidate to succeed the outgoing governor.
Supporters highlighted his legislative experience, political profile, and capacity to address Kano’s socio-economic and infrastructural challenges as key factors in their endorsement.
The move underscores the APC’s strategic mobilisation in Kano, a state considered pivotal in national politics due to its large electorate and historical influence in presidential elections.
Party leaders indicated that consolidating support for Tinubu and Barau early would strengthen the APC’s position in both national and state-level contests.
In recent months, the APC has seen several regional and zonal caucuses across Nigeria throw their weight behind Tinubu’s reelection bid. Similarly, Senator Barau has garnered additional support from former local government chairmen in Kano, who adopted him as the party’s sole candidate for the 2027 governorship race, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the state effectively.
Political analysts say these endorsements could shape voter sentiment in Kano and potentially influence outcomes in surrounding states, given the state’s status as a key political stronghold. As the 2027 elections approach, the APC’s early consolidation in Kano signals a determined effort to retain influence both at the federal and state levels.
The endorsements, while significant, also set the stage for expected contestation within the party and from opposition parties, as the political landscape continues to heat up ahead of the general elections.
