FRSC Moves to Clear Abuja–Lokoja Gridlock Ahead of Christmas Travel

With the Christmas rush intensifying travel on major highways, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has stepped up intervention on the Abuja–Lokoja Road following days of severe traffic congestion that left motorists stranded.

The Corps confirmed that additional officers and tow trucks have been deployed to the busy corridor to restore traffic flow and promptly remove broken-down vehicles and other obstructions.

The decision was taken on the directive of the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, as complaints mounted over the prolonged gridlock.

Announcing the development in a statement on Sunday, FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, said the move was aimed at easing the situation and improving safety for road users.

“The FRSC Corps Marshal has ordered the deployment of additional officers and tow trucks along the Abuja–Lokoja Road to ease the ongoing traffic gridlock and ensure swift removal of obstructions,” Ogungbemide said.

According to the Corps, the congestion is the result of several overlapping challenges, including a surge in traffic due to the festive season, construction activities at multiple sections of the road, and unsafe driving practices by some motorists.

“The congestion is largely due to increased vehicular movement, ongoing construction points, as well as undisciplined and impatient drivers driving against traffic,” the spokesperson explained.

The situation on the highway has sparked public concern, as some travellers reported being stuck for as long as three days.

Motorists who spoke with the Nigerian Television Authority said they had been unable to move since early Saturday, just days before Christmas.

In response, the FRSC appealed to road users to support ongoing efforts by complying with traffic regulations and cooperating with officers deployed along the route.

“Motorists travelling along the corridor are advised to cooperate with personnel on duty for smooth traffic flow,” Ogungbemide added.

The Corps expressed optimism that the reinforced presence would significantly reduce delays and improve movement on the Lokoja–Abuja highway as holiday travel peaks.
