FRSC Deploys Additional Officers, Tow Trucks to Ease Gridlock on Abuja–Lokoja Road

The Federal Road Safety Corps has ordered the immediate deployment of additional personnel and tow trucks along the Abuja–Lokoja Road following persistent traffic congestion on the busy highway, particularly as festive travel peaks across the country.

The directive, issued by the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, is aimed at restoring free flow of traffic and improving safety on the corridor, which serves as a major link between the Federal Capital Territory and several states in the North-Central and southern parts of Nigeria. In recent days, motorists have complained of hours-long gridlock, with many vehicles stranded due to a combination of heavy traffic volume, road construction activities, and broken-down vehicles left unattended on the carriageway.

According to the FRSC, the deployment of extra officers will strengthen traffic control, while additional tow trucks will ensure the prompt removal of stalled or improperly parked vehicles that often worsen congestion.

The Corps noted that poor driving habits, including lane indiscipline, reckless overtaking, and motorists driving against traffic at construction zones, have significantly contributed to the situation.

The FRSC warned that traffic offenders would be sanctioned, stressing that disobedience to traffic rules not only delays movement but also increases the risk of crashes. Motorists were urged to remain patient, obey road signs, and follow the instructions of traffic officers on duty to allow for smoother coordination along the route.

The Corps also advised travelers to plan their journeys properly, ensure their vehicles are in good condition before setting out, and avoid unnecessary stops on the highway. It reassured road users that it is working closely with other relevant agencies to manage traffic flow and enhance safety on the Abuja–Lokoja Road throughout the festive period and beyond.

The intervention underscores the FRSC’s broader commitment to reducing road crashes and improving travel experience on Nigeria’s major highways, especially during periods of increased vehicular movement.
