Lagos State Constitutes Monitoring Team to Oversee Security Funds

In a move aimed at strengthening accountability and ensuring transparency in the use of security resources, the Lagos State Government has established a dedicated monitoring team tasked with overseeing how security funds are managed and deployed across the state.

The announcement was made by officials of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF), who described the initiative as a proactive measure to ensure that both public and private contributions earmarked for security purposes are properly utilised and accounted for.

The monitoring team’s responsibilities include tracking vehicles and other assets purchased with security funds, conducting regular inspections to verify their condition and usage, and maintaining comprehensive records of equipment deployed to security agencies, including the state’s Rapid Response Squad.

The team is also expected to monitor repairs and refurbishments financed through the fund and ensure that all expenditures are aligned with the intended objectives.

Dr. Ayo Ogunsan, Executive Secretary and CEO of the LSSTF, stressed the importance of accountability, saying the team would help build public confidence by ensuring that resources allocated to security initiatives are managed efficiently.

“Transparency will no longer be optional; it will be the standard,” he said, adding that the team would also strengthen internal governance and reporting systems within the LSSTF.

The initiative comes amid growing calls for enhanced oversight of security financing, particularly following concerns over resource utilisation in recent years.

To support the monitoring activities, the LSSTF has indicated that a specialised monitoring vehicle will be deployed, enabling the team to conduct field assessments more effectively.

Officials noted that the team will also provide feedback to stakeholders and the public, ensuring that citizens are kept informed about how security funds are being applied. By doing so, the Lagos State Government aims to guarantee that investments in security translate into tangible improvements in safety and protection for residents.

The monitoring team is expected to commence operations immediately, with regular reports on findings, field activities, and recommendations to be shared publicly to enhance transparency and reinforce trust in the state’s security architecture.

This move underscores Lagos State’s commitment to safeguarding public resources and ensuring that all contributions to the security sector are deployed efficiently to address crime and enhance overall public safety.
