Kwara Assembly Suspends Lawmaker for Recording and Exposing Closed-Door Session

The Kwara State House of Assembly has suspended Hon. Saba Yisa Gideon, representing Edu State Constituency, for three months after he recorded a closed-door session of the House and shared the audio with an unauthorised party.

The suspension underscores the Assembly’s commitment to maintaining confidentiality and discipline within its legislative processes.

The matter was raised during a plenary session on Thursday, where are members accused Gideon of breaching the privileges of the House and acting in contempt of the Assembly.

Lawmakers emphasized that closed-door sessions are convened to allow free and frank discussion on sensitive matters, and any unauthorised disclosure could undermine the integrity of the legislative body.

During the proceedings, Gideon reportedly admitted to recording and sharing the audio, prompting the House to take swift action.

The motion for his suspension was moved without notice by the Leader of the House, Abdulkadir Magaji, who cited the relevant provisions of the Assembly’s rules on privileges as well as the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act.

The Speaker of the House stressed that the sanction was necessary to protect the dignity of the legislature and ensure that members respect established rules.

The Assembly also directed Gideon to submit a formal written apology within the three-month suspension period. During this time, the lawmaker is barred from attending plenary sessions or participating in committee activities.

Observers note that this action highlights the tension between legislative confidentiality and public transparency, a challenge faced by state assemblies across Nigeria. While the public has an interest in legislative proceedings, the Assembly maintains that certain discussions must remain private to facilitate effective governance and internal deliberation.

The suspension of Hon. Gideon serves as a stern warning to other members and reflects the Kwara State House of Assembly’s resolve to enforce discipline, uphold its privileges, and maintain orderly legislative conduct.
