We Communicated in Codes Like Intelligence Operatives,’ Buhari’s Daughter Recounts Life Inside Aso Rock

One of the daughters of former President Muhammadu Buhari has offered a rare glimpse into the private world of Nigeria’s seat of power, describing an atmosphere so tightly controlled that even family communication required extreme caution. Speaking during a public engagement marking reflections on her father’s years in office, she revealed that members of the Buhari family often resorted to coded notes to pass messages while living in the Presidential Villa.

According to her account, daily life in Aso Rock was defined by rigid security protocols, constant surveillance and a deep sense of restraint. She explained that the family quickly learned that privacy was a luxury they could no longer take for granted, as aides, security operatives and officials were always nearby.

To avoid misunderstandings or leaks, they devised discreet ways of communicating among themselves, sometimes writing brief notes and avoiding open conversations on sensitive matters.

She noted that the approach was not born out of fear, but from an awareness of the environment they were in. As the family of a sitting president, every word or gesture could be misinterpreted or exaggerated beyond its original intent.

Writing messages, she said, became a practical way to maintain family bonds while respecting the intense security culture of the Villa.

Reflecting on her father’s leadership style, Buhari’s daughter described him as a man who carried the weight of office with seriousness, even at home. She said the former president deliberately separated governance from family life, rarely discussing state matters with his children.

This, she explained, was part of his effort to maintain discipline and avoid the perception of undue influence.

She also spoke about the emotional toll of living under constant public scrutiny, explaining that simple family moments were often overshadowed by national expectations and criticism directed at her father’s administration.

Despite this, she said the experience taught her resilience, discretion and a deeper understanding of public service.

Her remarks have sparked conversations on social media, with many Nigerians expressing surprise at the extent of caution exercised within the presidential household.

Others say her story sheds light on the often unseen personal sacrifices made by families of national leaders.

As debates continue about Buhari’s legacy, her reflections offer a human perspective on power, showing that beyond policies and politics, life inside Aso Rock demanded vigilance, restraint and, at times, communication methods more fitting of intelligence operatives than a family home.
