Governor Idris Signs 2026 Budget of N642.9bn Into Law

Kebbi State has formally adopted its 2026 fiscal plan with Governor Nasir Idris assenting to a N642.9 billion Appropriation Bill, marking the conclusion of the legislative process for the state’s spending framework for the coming year.

The budget was signed into law on Tuesday at the Government House in Birnin Kebbi after its transmission by the Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Alhaji Usman Muhammad-Zuru, following the bill’s passage by lawmakers.

Speaking at the brief ceremony, Governor Idris praised the House of Assembly for what he described as a swift and people-focused consideration of the budget proposal.

He said the seamless collaboration between the executive and legislative arms reflected a shared commitment to improving the welfare of residents across the state.

According to the governor, the administration remains determined to pursue policies that directly impact citizens, noting that close cooperation with the legislature would continue to drive development initiatives.

He also stressed the need to strengthen the state’s Internally Generated Revenue, pointing out that reliance on federal allocations alone could not adequately address the needs of the population.

Idris further clarified that the budget should be seen as a financial forecast rather than readily available funds, explaining that it is based on projected earnings from both internal sources and federal revenue.

The governor described the House of Assembly as a true voice of the people, acknowledging its diligence in reviewing and approving executive bills aimed at governance and development.

Earlier, Speaker Muhammad-Zuru said the signing of the 2026 budget represented an important step in Kebbi State’s democratic and developmental process.

He noted that the appropriation law was the product of wide consultations, careful deliberations, and detailed scrutiny by legislators.

The speaker disclosed that the governor had so far assented to about 60 bills passed by the assembly, many of which, he said, directly affect the daily lives of Kebbi residents.

He reaffirmed the legislature’s resolve to maintain a productive partnership with the executive arm in order to fast-track development across the state.

A breakdown of the approved budget shows that N163.57 billion, representing 25 per cent of the total outlay, was allocated to recurrent expenditure, while N479.36 billion, accounting for 75 per cent, was earmarked for capital projects.

Muhammad-Zuru reiterated that the N642.9 billion budget signed into law was exactly as presented by the governor and subsequently approved by the House of Assembly.
