ADC Accuses EFCC of Political Bias Over Malami’s Detention
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kebbi State on Sunday accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of acting beyond its legal powers and displaying political bias over the continued detention of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN.
During a press conference at Azbir Hotel in Birnin Kebbi, the party raised the allegation and demanded Malami’s immediate release, saying, his detention is unconstitutional and politically motivated.
Addressing journalists, the Kebbi State Chairman of the ADC, Sufyan Bala, alleged that the anti-graft agency had exceeded its mandate and was operating outside constitutional limits.
“The EFCC is a creation of the law and must operate strictly within the confines of the Constitution. When law enforcement becomes selective and biased, it poses a serious threat to democracy and the rule of law,” Bala said.
The ADC claimed that Malami’s detention was part of a broader strategy to intimidate opposition figures and pressure them into defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
The party noted that Malami, a senior member and prominent leader of the ADC in Kebbi State, had not been formally charged with any offence.
According to the party, holding him without charge violates the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), insisting that all citizens are equal before the law.
“We are not asking for special treatment. He must not be treated above the law, but certainly not beneath it. Democracy cannot thrive under fear, intimidation and lawlessness,” Bala said.
Despite the development, the ADC said it remained resolute, assuring its members and supporters of its commitment to democratic ideals and active political participation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party chairman urged members across Kebbi State to remain calm and law-abiding, while reiterating the ADC’s determination to challenge what it described as ineffective governance at the local, state and national levels.
Meanwhile, earlier report has it that the EFCC detained Malami after he allegedly failed to meet bail conditions earlier granted to him. He has remained in custody since December 8 and is reportedly under investigation for 18 offences, including alleged abuse of office and terrorism financing.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not publicly disclosed details of the investigation or responded to the allegations of political bias raised by the ADC.
