Trump Vows Retaliation After Deadly ISIS Attack on U.S. Forces in Syria
U.S. President Donald Trump has promised a strong response following a deadly attack in central Syria that claimed the lives of two American service members and one U.S. civilian interpreter.
The ambush, attributed to an Islamic State (ISIS) gunman, underscores the continuing threat posed by remnants of the extremist group, despite its territorial defeat in the region.
The attack occurred on December 13, 2025, near the historic town of Palmyra, a region that remains volatile and outside full Syrian government control.
According to U.S. Central Command, the assailant opened fire on American and allied forces during a joint patrol. He was subsequently neutralized by partner security personnel.
Three other U.S. soldiers sustained injuries and are reported to be in stable condition.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, President Trump condemned the ambush as “an ISIS attack against the U.S. and Syria” and vowed that there would be “very serious retaliation” against those responsible.
He also offered condolences to the families of the deceased, including the civilian interpreter, highlighting the sacrifice of all Americans serving abroad.
Trump reinforced his message on social media, reiterating that the United States would respond decisively to any attack on its forces.
He noted that Syrian President Ahmed al‑Sharaa expressed anger and concern over the incident, reflecting ongoing cooperation between U.S. forces and Syrian authorities in counterterrorism operations.
The Pentagon confirmed that it is actively investigating the circumstances of the attack. While specific details of potential retaliatory measures were not disclosed, Trump’s statement signals a likely escalation of military operations targeting ISIS elements in Syria.
This ambush marks the first U.S. military fatalities in Syria in over a year and highlights the persistent risks faced by American troops deployed for counterterrorism missions. U.S. forces remain in the country to prevent a resurgence of ISIS, support local security forces, and maintain stability in areas liberated from extremist control.
Analysts say the incident may prompt a broader reassessment of U.S. military engagement in the region and could influence the strategy for combating ISIS cells that continue to operate clandestinely across Syria and neighboring countries.
