PDP Faction Vows to Reclaim Osun, Ekiti After Strategic Meeting with Obasanjo

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared its determination to reclaim political control of Osun and Ekiti states, following a high-level consultation with former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The delegation, led by factional PDP chairman Taminu Turaki, met Obasanjo at his residence within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library complex, describing the visit as part of broader efforts to reposition the party ahead of upcoming off-cycle governorship elections and the 2027 general elections.

Speaking to journalists after the closed-door meeting, Turaki said the PDP leadership sought the counsel and moral support of the former president, whom he described as a “father of the nation and pillar of democracy.”

He noted that the party was undergoing a process of renewal and was now focused on rebuilding structures, reconciling aggrieved members, and preparing for electoral battles in key states.

According to Turaki, Ekiti State is the party’s immediate target, with Osun State next in line, as part of a strategy to demonstrate that the PDP remains a viable and competitive opposition force. He expressed confidence that voters in both states would respond positively to what he described as the party’s renewed commitment to good governance and internal reform.

Other prominent party figures present at the meeting included former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, former governors Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu and Jonah Jang, as well as members of the faction’s national leadership.

They emphasised unity and grassroots mobilisation as central to the party’s recovery plan.

The visit comes amid persistent internal divisions within the PDP, with rival factions laying claim to the party’s national leadership and control of its structures. Despite these challenges, the Turaki-led group insists it represents a revitalised movement capable of regaining lost ground, particularly in the South-West.

Although Obasanjo has largely stayed above partisan politics in recent years, he was reported to have encouraged the delegation to remain disciplined and focused, stressing the importance of unity and credible leadership in rebuilding public trust.

Political observers say the PDP’s renewed push for Osun and Ekiti reflects wider efforts by the opposition party to regain relevance after recent electoral setbacks, even as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) continues to consolidate its influence across the region.

The developments signal the early stages of intensified political manoeuvring as parties position themselves ahead of key elections that could shape the balance of power in the run-up to 2027.
