Governor Diri Orders Autopsy on Deputy Over Sudden Death
Bayelsa State has been thrown into deep mourning following the sudden death of the state’s deputy governor, whose unexpected passing has raised concern and intense public interest.
In response to growing speculation surrounding the circumstances of the incident, Governor Douye Diri has ordered a comprehensive autopsy to determine the exact cause of death and provide clarity to the public.
The deputy governor reportedly collapsed while carrying out official duties and was rushed to a medical facility in Yenagoa, where doctors later confirmed him dead.
News of the incident spread rapidly across the state and the country, triggering shock, disbelief, and an outpouring of condolences from political leaders, traditional rulers, and residents.
Governor Diri, while addressing government officials and sympathisers at the Government House, explained that the decision to conduct a post-mortem examination was informed by the need for transparency and accountability.
According to him, the state owes it to the family of the deceased and the people of Bayelsa to establish the medical facts surrounding the sudden loss, rather than allow rumours and unverified claims to dominate public discourse.
The governor stressed that the autopsy would be handled by qualified medical professionals and conducted in line with standard procedures. He added that the findings would help put to rest speculation, making the rounds on social media, and ensuring that the matter is not politicised.
Following the announcement, the state government declared a period of official mourning in honour of the late deputy governor. Flags were ordered to fly at half-mast across public buildings, while official engagements were scaled down as a mark of respect.
Condolence registers were also opened at designated locations for citizens and well-wishers to pay their respects.
Political leaders from within and outside the Niger Delta region have continued to express sympathy with the Bayelsa government and the bereaved family, describing the death as a painful blow to the state’s leadership. Many noted the deputy governor’s contributions to governance and his role in promoting peace and stability in the state.
As investigations proceed, government officials have urged residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.
They assured the public that the outcome of the autopsy would be communicated once the process is concluded.
For now, Bayelsa remains united in grief, awaiting answers that authorities say will provide closure over the sudden and tragic loss of a key figure in the state’s administration.
