Ex‑President’s Son Implicated, Arrested After Benin Foils Coup Attempt
Authorities in Benin Republic have arrested Chabi Yayi, son of former president Thomas Boni Yayi, in the aftermath of last week’s foiled coup attempt that briefly destabilized the West African nation.
The arrest, which took place early Sunday, December 14, 2025, comes amid ongoing investigations into the failed mutiny.
Family sources and media reports confirmed that Chabi Yayi was taken into custody at his residence in Cotonou.
The government has not disclosed specific charges against him, but security officials say the detention is linked to the broader crackdown following the attempted military takeover.
The coup attempt occurred on December 7, 2025, when a faction of soldiers briefly seized control of state television and announced the removal of President Patrice Talon.
The insurgents, calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, claimed authority over national institutions, but government forces quickly regained control.
Loyalist troops, supported by regional security partners, arrested several soldiers and opposition figures suspected of involvement.
President Talon described the situation as under control and urged citizens to resume normal activities, while security agencies continued rounding up suspects connected to the mutiny.
Dozens have been detained so far, and some alleged plotters remain at large, reportedly fleeing to neighbouring countries.
Thomas Boni Yayi, who served as Benin’s president from 2006 to 2016, had condemned the attempted takeover shortly after it occurred.
However, the detention of his son Chabi has drawn attention and raised questions among observers about the scope of the government’s post-coup response, especially regarding the involvement of civilian family members of prominent political figures.
The incident underscores growing political tensions in Benin ahead of upcoming elections, highlighting the challenges facing the government in maintaining stability and ensuring accountability among military and political actors.
As investigations continue, authorities are expected to release further details regarding Chabi Yayi’s detention, including the nature of the charges and any additional arrests linked to the failed coup attempt.
