Tinubu Approves New Army Training Depot in Abakaliki to Boost Manpower

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new Depot Nigerian Army in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, as part of a strategic initiative to bolster the Army’s manpower and enhance operational readiness amidst pervasive national security challenges.

The approval was announced on Saturday by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, during the passing-out parade for 3,439 recruits of the 89 Regular Recruits Intake at the existing Depot Nigerian Army in Zaria, Kaduna State.

Lt. Gen. Shaibu described the new Abakaliki depot as a crucial step in the Army’s long-term strategy to ensure a steady pipeline of trained soldiers for deployments nationwide.

* Manpower Expansion: The facility is intended to supplement existing training centers like Zaria (which has been the backbone of Army training since 1924) and the one in Osogbo, strengthening the Army’s ability to increase its trained personnel base.

* Operational Readiness: The depot will provide specialized, mission-focused training, prioritizing skills in marksmanship, fieldcraft, and combat preparedness to produce disciplined and professional soldiers ready to confront emerging security threats.

* Modernization Support: The initiative supports the Army’s modernization efforts, which include updated training programs, enhanced recruit welfare, and greater institutional strength.

The COAS praised President Tinubu’s consistent support for the Nigerian Army, calling the approval a significant boost to national defense capabilities.

The new depot in Abakaliki is scheduled to become operational soon. The 3,439 recruits who passed out from Zaria, along with another batch of 3,500 recruits expected from Osogbo next week, are slated to receive advanced infantry training before deployment to various theaters of operation.
