Omisore Capitulates, Backs Oyebamiji as APC Adopts Consensus Candidate for Osun Governorship Race

A major shift has emerged within the Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as Senator Iyiola Omisore has formally embraced the selection of Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji as the partyโ€™s consensus candidate ahead of the 2026 governorship election.

The decision follows a series of intense negotiations involving senior party figures, national stakeholders, and aspirants who have been working behind the scenes to prevent a divisive primary.

The breakthrough reportedly came after a high-level meeting in Abuja, where top aspirants were invited for consultations aimed at resolving internal disputes and streamlining the nomination process. Party insiders revealed that the discussions centred on presenting a single formidable candidate capable of uniting the party and enhancing its competitiveness in the forthcoming election.

Oyebamiji, a former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority and a long-standing party loyalist, emerged as the preferred figure after several aspirants agreed to withdraw in his favour.

Although Omisore was not initially present at the early rounds of negotiations, he later announced his willingness to align with the consensus arrangement. His endorsement is seen as a crucial stabilising force, given his influence within Osun politics and his history as a strong mobiliser within the party.

According to sources close to his camp, Omisore has instructed his supporters to respect the partyโ€™s decision and work to ensure the APC approaches the election without internal fractures.

Party leaders say the consensus strategy is designed to prevent the type of post-primary crisis that has affected the APC in past elections. By rallying its major stakeholders around a single candidate, the party aims to conserve resources, streamline its message and rebuild grassroots enthusiasm in a state that has been highly competitive for decades.

Supporters of the new arrangement argue that Oyebamijiโ€™s federal-level experience and administrative background make him well-positioned to mount a strong challenge.

Nonetheless, some critics within the party warn that consensus decisions must be carefully managed to avoid alienating local delegates and supporters who prefer open competition.

They caution that heavy-handed settlements could generate pockets of resentment if not followed by transparent reconciliation efforts across all party structures.

As the APC prepares to officially ratify the consensus choice, the partyโ€™s attention now turns to harmonising campaign structures and ensuring that all blocs feel represented in the new alignment.

Political observers note that the success of the consensus framework will depend on how effectively the party integrates sidelined aspirants and balances interests at both the state and ward levels.

For now, the public acceptance by Omisore marks a significant step toward presenting a unified front. With months remaining before the general election climate intensifies, the APCโ€™s ability to maintain this newly forged unity will play a decisive role in shaping its prospects in the Osun governorship race.
