Ngige Not Kidnapped, in EFCC Custody

Confusion spread across social media on Thursday after reports circulated that former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, had been kidnapped from his residence in Abuja by unknown gunmen.

The rumours triggered widespread concern, with many Nigerians seeking confirmation about the former Anambra State governor’s whereabouts.

However, hours later, the narrative shifted as his former media aide, Fred Chukwuelobe, debunked the kidnapping claims, clarifying that Ngige was not abducted but was instead taken into custody by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

According to him, the online reports of a kidnapping were “misleading and incorrect.”

Multiple Nigerian news outlets reported the same development, noting that Ngige’s presence with the EFCC had led to misinterpretations and exaggerated claims online. While the EFCC has not formally released a public statement on the circumstances surrounding the detention, sources confirm he is currently in their custody in Abuja.

Details about the reason for his detention have not yet been disclosed, but the clarification from his aide has significantly calmed earlier fears of a criminal abduction.

The incident highlights how quickly misinformation spreads during breaking news, especially when involving high-profile political figures. For now, what is confirmed is simple: Dr. Chris Ngige was not kidnapped — he is with the EFCC, pending further investigation.
