Rivers LG Chairmen, Ward Councillors Back Tinubu for Second Term in 2027
A broad coalition of local government chairmen and ward councillors in Rivers State has formally declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bid to seek re-election in the 2027 presidential race, marking one of the strongest grassroots endorsements the president has so far received from the South-South region.
The declaration reportedly followed a series of meetings held across multiple local government areas, where council executives and ward representatives affirmed what they described as the president’s “stabilizing role” in the state’s political landscape over the past year.
Participants at the gatherings said the endorsement was a collective decision aimed at encouraging continuity at the federal level, especially after months of political tension in the state.
Several council chairmen praised the president’s interventions during Rivers State’s governance crisis earlier in the year, saying federal engagement helped ease tensions and restore administrative order. According to them, Tinubu’s leadership “created the conditions for reconciliation,” enabling local councils to resume normal operations.
They added that a second term would allow him to consolidate reforms initiated since taking office.
Ward councillors echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the administration’s ongoing infrastructure programmes, security initiatives, and support for sub-national governments.
Many of them argued that endorsing the president ahead of the 2027 contest would align Rivers State with national development priorities and help attract more federal partnerships.
Political analysts, however, note that such endorsements often reflect early mobilization efforts by political actors seeking relevance ahead of the election season. While the support showcases a coordinated front at the grassroots level, some observers caution that it may not necessarily translate into broad voter consensus across the state’s diverse political blocs.
The endorsement from Rivers LG chairmen and councillors comes at a time when national political alignments are beginning to take shape. With parties and powerbrokers gradually positioning themselves for the next electoral cycle, the president’s supporters are expected to intensify efforts to strengthen his presence in strategic states, including those where political developments have remained fluid.
As 2027 draws nearer, the Rivers declaration adds a new layer to the evolving political climate, signalling that grassroots actors in the state intend to play a prominent role in shaping the direction of the coming presidential campaign.
