EFCC Grills Former Justice Minister Abubakar Malami Again Over Abacha Loot Recovery

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has once again summoned former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), for questioning as part of its ongoing probe into the handling of recovered funds from the late Head of State, Sani Abacha.

The former minister appeared before the commission in Abuja for hours of interrogation and was later released on bail, with conditions including the surrender of his international passport and daily reporting to EFCC headquarters through December 2025.

Malami was first invited by the EFCC on November 28, 2025, after allegations surfaced regarding his management of the recovered sum of approximately US$322.5 million, which forms part of funds repatriated to Nigeria following international assistance.

The EFCC is investigating possible duplication of recovery processes, abuse of office, and alleged money laundering linked to the handling of these funds.

During the recent interrogation, Malami strongly denied all allegations, describing the claims as “baseless, illogical, and devoid of substance.”

He maintained that the funds were recovered under his supervision and that prior recoveries had not been properly lodged into the Federation Account.

He also refuted suggestions linking him to terrorism financing, calling them “misleading and unfounded.”

The EFCC has reportedly made it clear that Malami’s daily appearances before the commission in December are part of a thorough effort to clarify discrepancies and ensure accountability in the management of Nigeria’s recovered assets.

Analysts say the renewed scrutiny highlights the seriousness of the investigation and reflects increased pressure on former senior officials involved in high-profile asset recovery deals.

The development has attracted national attention, as the outcome of the EFCC’s probe may have broader implications for transparency, governance, and public confidence in the management of recovered public funds in Nigeria.
