Gov. Hyacinth Alia Receives U.S. Congressional Delegation, Seeks Stronger Support on Security and Humanitarian Crisis

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, on Tuesday hosted members of the United States Congress who visited Makurdi on a diplomatic mission to assess the state’s security and humanitarian situation.

The visiting delegation, received at the Benue State Government House, held a closed-door meeting with Governor Alia, during which discussions centered on the persistent security challenges in the state, displacement of communities, and the urgent need for sustainable peace.

Governor Alia briefed the U.S. lawmakers on the humanitarian burden resulting from years of violent attacks in parts of the state. He highlighted the conditions of thousands of internally displaced persons (IDPs), stressing that the state government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility without international support.

“Our people have endured very difficult times. We are working tirelessly to restore peace, but we need strong global partnerships to rebuild communities and support displaced families,” Governor Alia told the delegation.

The U.S. Congress members commended the Benue State Government for its efforts in stabilizing affected areas and pledged to relay their findings to relevant committees in Washington.

They also expressed interest in exploring areas of cooperation that could help strengthen security, enhance humanitarian relief, and support long-term development initiatives.

The visit forms part of broader U.S. engagements across Nigeria aimed at understanding local security realities and identifying ways international partners can contribute to peace-building.

Governor Alia reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting citizens and restoring normalcy, noting that foreign partnerships could play a significant role in achieving lasting peace.

The diplomatic delegation is expected to visit selected communities and humanitarian centres before departing the state.
