Emefiele Refutes Terrorism-Financing Allegations, Warns Against ‘Reckless Misinformation’

Former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, has firmly rejected reports linking him to terrorism financing, describing the allegations as a calculated attempt to smear his reputation and mislead the public.

In a statement issued on Saturday, December 6, 2025, Emefiele said the publications accusing him of sponsoring terrorism were not only false but intentionally crafted to sow distrust and confusion.

He insisted the claims lacked substance and were driven by individuals he described as “misguided elements” pursuing undisclosed agendas.

Emefiele stressed that at no point in his public career or private life had he engaged in any activity associated with terrorism or any act capable of undermining national security.

He added that he had never been invited, interrogated, or investigated by security agencies on matters relating to terrorism financing.

According to him, the allegations stemmed from an interview granted by an individual he had never met or interacted with. He maintained that linking him to such claims was a deliberate act of mischief.

The former CBN governor cautioned that the fight against terrorism was too sensitive to be toyed with in the media space, urging journalists and media organisations to uphold professional ethics by verifying information before publication.

He warned that sensational or unsubstantiated reports could jeopardise national efforts to tackle security challenges.

Emefiele further appealed to Nigerians to dismiss the reports in their entirety, reiterating that there was “no scintilla of truth” to the claims.

He called on the press to avoid amplifying falsehoods or engaging in reporting that could erode public trust.

The allegations, which circulated widely across several platforms earlier in the week, had generated debates and raised questions among members of the public.

Emefiele’s response now adds a new layer to the ongoing conversation about accountability, media responsibility, and the broader implications of misinformation in Nigeria’s security landscape.
