Machado, Venezuelan Opposition Leader to Collect Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo

Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been named the recipient of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, the Nobel Institute confirmed on Saturday.

Machado, a long-time advocate for democratic reforms in Venezuela, is set to travel to Oslo to receive the prestigious award in person.

The Nobel Committee cited Machado’s “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and her efforts to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy” as the basis for the award.

Machado, who has faced political persecution in her home country, has been a central figure in mobilizing opposition movements, championing free elections, and advocating for civil rights.

Machado’s upcoming trip to Oslo comes amid heightened tensions in Venezuela. Authorities have labelled her a “fugitive” over alleged charges of conspiracy and incitement, raising concerns over her safety should she leave the country.

Despite these warnings, Machado has expressed her determination to attend the award ceremony, emphasizing that the prize recognizes the broader pro-democracy movement in Venezuela, not just her individual efforts.

The formal Nobel Peace Prize ceremony is scheduled for December 10, 2025. Machado’s recognition marks the first time a Venezuelan national has received the Nobel Peace Prize, drawing international attention to the country’s ongoing political crisis and human rights challenges.

For many Venezuelans and supporters worldwide, Machado’s award offers a symbol of hope, underscoring the global acknowledgement of peaceful activism and the fight for democracy in the country.
