Kwara Police Intercept 100 Rounds of AK-47 Ammunition, Arrest Four Suspected Arms Suppliers in Edu LGA
The Kwara State Police Command has arrested four individuals and recovered 100 rounds of live AK‑47 ammunition during a security operation in Edu Local Government Area.
The operation, carried out along the Gbugbu–Patigi Road in the early hours, also uncovered assorted charm items believed to be used by criminal elements for protection.
The arrested suspects were identified as Owolaramfe Rafiu, the driver of the vehicle, along with Musa Mohammed (20), Adam Alhaji Lawal (18), and Musa Shaibu (45), who were found transporting the ammunition concealed among their personal belongings.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the consignment originated from Nasarawa State and was intended for a recipient within the Gbugbu community. Police have launched further investigations to track down the intended recipients and dismantle the associated criminal network.
Kwara State Police Commissioner, Adekimi Ojo, described the arrest as a significant blow to banditry and kidnapping networks operating in the North‑Central region. He commended the officers for their vigilance and reiterated the command’s commitment to disrupting illegal arms supply chains that fuel violent crimes.
In a related development, the police also apprehended a suspected kidnapper, Aliu Abubakar, at Oro‑Ago Motor Park after community members tipped off authorities about his suspicious activities. Examination of his mobile device revealed images showing him and associates posing with firearms and large sums of cash, allegedly linked to kidnapping operations.
Abubakar is cooperating with investigators, providing intelligence to assist in dismantling the criminal syndicate.
Authorities emphasized that these operations highlight the growing efforts by security agencies in Kwara State to combat illegal arms trafficking, which has been a major enabler of armed banditry and other violent crimes across the region. The suspects remain in custody, and police have secured the recovered ammunition as evidence, with further arrests anticipated as the investigation progresses.
