Dangote Pledges to Keep Fuel Affordable for Nigerians Amid Smuggling Concerns
Aliko Dangote, Chairman of Dangote Group, has assured Nigerians that the Dangote Refinery will continue to sell Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) at a “reasonable price,” even as challenges such as border smuggling and global market fluctuations persist.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Dangote emphasized that his company’s fuel pricing remains competitive. While some sellers in the informal market reportedly charge between ₦1,500 and ₦1,600 per litre, the refinery’s output sells at roughly half that rate, making it more accessible to consumers nationwide.
Dangote highlighted that maintaining affordable fuel prices is essential not only for domestic consumption but also for curbing illicit imports. He pledged that both diesel and gasoline would continue to be supplied at prices aimed at reducing the appeal of smuggling, which he described as an ongoing challenge despite strict border controls.
The refinery also plans to ensure consistent daily supply, reportedly up to 50 million litres per day, to meet Nigeria’s demand, particularly during the 2025 yuletide season. Analysts note that stable supply from local refineries could help ease fuel shortages, stabilize pump prices, and reduce inflationary pressures on transportation and everyday costs.
While the pledge brings optimism, experts caution that factors such as global crude-oil price volatility, foreign-exchange pressures, and distribution inefficiencies could still influence pump prices across the country.
Nevertheless, Dangote’s commitment represents a significant step toward improving domestic fuel supply and making it more affordable for Nigerians.
