PDP Appoints Nine-Member South-East Caretaker Committee on Reconciliation Mission

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the appointment of a new nine-member South-East Caretaker Committee, marking another major step in its ongoing restructuring efforts across key geopolitical zones.

The announcement, contained in a statement issued on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, by the PDP National Organising Secretary, Hon. Umar M. Bature, confirmed that the National Working Committee (NWC) approved the appointments in line with the party’s constitution. According to the statement, Chief Chidiebere Egwu has been named Chairman of the Committee, while Hon. Mike Ahumibe will serve as Secretary. Other members include Pascal Ukwani, Barr. Ukpai Ukairo, Hon. Kingsley Okafor, Hon. Chukwudi Apugo, Hon. Obiora Ugwu, Mrs. Anthonia Nwankwo, and Emeka Okeke. The Caretaker Committee has been mandated to administer and coordinate the party’s affairs in the South-East beginning immediately from December 2 and for a period not exceeding 30 days, as provided under Section 21(2)(a–b) of the PDP Constitution. The move comes at a time when the PDP is facing intense internal restructuring nationwide, following recent defections, leadership disputes, rival conventions, and escalating factional tensions—particularly in the South-East and South-South regions. The appointment is seen as part of a broader effort by the NWC to stabilise the party’s structures, restore order, and prepare for fresh congresses ahead of the 2027 election cycle. Party insiders say the South-East zone has been a critical battleground for influence among competing blocs within the PDP, making the establishment of a neutral caretaker team essential for rebuilding confidence among members. The NWC, while congratulating the appointees, urged them to ensure strict adherence to the party’s constitution, maintain unity within the zone, and supervise the transition process leading to the election of a new substantive zonal executive. The Committee is expected to begin consultations immediately with state chapters across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo to stabilise party activities and address internal grievances. With the party’s national leadership under pressure to resolve multiple crises across its structures, the South-East caretaker appointment is widely viewed as a strategic move to reassert organisational control and rebuild the PDP’s presence in one of its historically strong regions.
