Oyebanji Re-nominates Former Commissioners for Assembly Screening in Ekiti Ahead of 2026 Election

Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has officially forwarded the names of his former commissioners to the State House of Assembly for screening, marking a significant step in reconstituting his executive council less than a year after its dissolution.

The governor had earlier dissolved his cabinet on August 10, 2025, as part of a strategic move to restructure his administration and address governance challenges in the state. At the time, affected commissioners and special advisers were asked to hand over their responsibilities, though key positions, including the Attorney-General and some critical ministries, were spared. The dissolution came amid increasing political activity in the state, with the 2026 governorship election approaching. In a move that surprised some political observers, Oyebanji has now re-nominated the same former commissioners for confirmation. The decision followed extensive consultations with the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership and other key stakeholders, including party members, community leaders, and political advisers. A statement from the governor’s office explained that the re-nomination was aimed at ensuring stability, continuity, and accountability within the state’s executive arm. Officials emphasized that the experience of the returning commissioners would help sustain ongoing projects, maintain administrative efficiency, and avoid disruptions in governance as the state gears up for the next election cycle. Political analysts note that the move signals the APC’s commitment to party unity and electoral preparedness. By retaining seasoned officials, the party aims to avoid internal conflicts that could undermine its chances in the 2026 governorship poll. The strategy is also seen as an effort to reassure residents and investors of continuity in policy implementation and development projects. The State House of Assembly is expected to begin screening the nominees in the coming days. Once confirmed, the returning commissioners will resume their roles, reinforcing the state government’s focus on continuity, stability, and effective governance. This development underscores Governor Oyebanji’s approach of balancing political strategy with administrative efficiency, as Ekiti prepares for a critical electoral year in 2026. Observers are closely watching how the reconstituted executive council will shape governance and policy priorities in the months leading up to the elections.
