Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai Joins ADC
Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, has officially obtained his membership card with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), marking a significant turn in his political journey and signaling a possible realignment ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.
The formal registration took place at the ADC office in Unguwar Sarki, Kaduna North, where El-Rufai was accompanied by a contingent of his loyal supporters, including former aides, political associates, and local government chairpersons.
During the ceremony, he received his official membership card — reportedly numbered “000002” — a symbolic gesture underscoring his prominent status within the party.
This development comes after a period of political turbulence for El-Rufai. In March 2025, he resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing concerns that the party had drifted away from its founding ideals.
He briefly joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), but the party later barred him from formal membership, accusing him of submitting forged documents. With his formal induction into the ADC, El-Rufai appears to have established a new political platform, signaling a fresh start as he positions himself for influence ahead of the next general election.
At the registration event, El-Rufai criticized his former parties, saying the APC had “abandoned the principles of progress” and that the SDP had become compromised.
He described ADC as his “political home” and encouraged Kaduna residents to register with the party.
“This is not just about me; it is about creating a platform that truly reflects the aspirations of the people,” El-Rufai said. His rhetoric emphasized accountability, governance reform, and the need to challenge what he described as “ineffective leadership” in Kaduna State.
Political analysts suggest that El-Rufai’s entry into ADC could significantly impact the opposition landscape, particularly in the Northwest.
His defection may encourage other politicians to consider ADC as a viable platform, potentially reshaping political alliances ahead of 2027. Observers also note that his move could influence voter alignment in Kaduna, where El-Rufai retains a strong support base.
By joining ADC, he may play a key role in mobilizing voters, challenging established parties, and redefining electoral strategies in the state and beyond.
Reactions to El-Rufai’s move have been mixed. Supporters praise him for taking a principled stand and seeking a platform aligned with his vision for reform, while critics argue that the frequent party switches highlight opportunism and political expediency.
The ADC, for its part, has welcomed El-Rufai’s membership, emphasizing the strategic and symbolic importance of acquiring a high-profile political figure ahead of the general election cycle. Nasir El-Rufai’s formal registration with ADC marks a critical juncture in his political career and sets the stage for a potentially transformative influence in the lead-up to Nigeria’s 2027 elections.
Political watchers will be closely monitoring how this move reshapes party alliances, voter sentiment, and the overall electoral landscape.
