Tinubu Approves Nigerian Team for Nigeria–US Security Working Group
President Bola Tinubu has approved the composition of the Nigerian contingent to the Nigeria–US Joint Working Group, a new bilateral platform designed to strengthen cooperation in addressing Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
The approval follows agreements reached during a recent high-level visit to Washington, D.C., by a Nigerian delegation led by the National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
The delegation engaged senior US government officials on counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, defence support, and broader security-sector reforms.
According to Presidency sources, the Nigeria–US Joint Working Group will serve as a structured mechanism for regular dialogue, operational coordination, and the alignment of strategic priorities between both countries.
It is expected to focus on combating terrorism, tackling violent extremism, improving border security, and supporting initiatives aimed at strengthening national stability.
The Nigerian team will include representatives from key security, intelligence, and defence agencies, as well as officials from ministries involved in internal security and international cooperation.
Their mandate includes developing joint action plans, reviewing progress on agreed programmes, and ensuring Nigeria maximises technical and strategic assistance from the United States.
President Tinubu, who has consistently emphasised the need for global partnerships to confront insecurity, was said to have directed the team to work closely with their US counterparts to deliver measurable results.
The establishment of the Joint Working Group is seen as a major boost to Nigeria’s ongoing security reforms and a sign of growing strategic ties between Abuja and Washington. Both countries are expected to hold their first formal session of the group in the coming weeks.
