Fubara in Major Rivers NYSC Orientation Camp Upgrade
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has approved a comprehensive upgrade and renovation of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Permanent Orientation Camp located at Nonwa-Gbam in Tai Local Government Area, in a move aimed at improving living conditions, welfare, and skill development opportunities for Corps Members deployed to the state.
The decision, which comes amid growing calls to enhance NYSC facilities nationwide, was announced earlier this week. Reports indicate that the planned upgrades will focus on expanding accommodation capacity, renovating existing structures, and providing essential amenities to create a more comfortable and conducive environment for the orientation programme. This includes improved hostels, upgraded learning spaces, and enhanced welfare services for all participants. Governor Fubara, while addressing Corps Members during the 2025 induction exercise, emphasized the importance of youth empowerment, urging participants to take full advantage of the NYSC skill-acquisition programmes to become self-reliant and economically independent. He stressed that the state government’s investment in upgrading the camp underscores its commitment to creating an enabling environment for young Nigerians to thrive during their national service year. The head of NYSC, Olakunle Nafiu, had previously appealed to the Rivers State Government to address infrastructure gaps at the Nonwa-Gbam camp, citing the growing number of Corps Members being posted to the state. While the auditorium at the camp has been described as one of the most modern and sizeable among NYSC camps nationwide, other critical facilities were reportedly insufficient, including hostels, recreational areas, and utility services. The upgrades approved by Governor Fubara aim to bridge these gaps, ensuring Corps Members have access to quality facilities and an improved orientation experience. Officials within the Rivers State Ministry of Youth Development highlighted that the renovation is not just about infrastructure, but also about enhancing the overall welfare and safety of Corps Members. The initiative is expected to make Rivers a more attractive posting destination for participants, encouraging higher engagement and participation in community development projects during their service year. Earlier in 2025, Governor Fubara had reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting NYSC operations in the state. He assured that youth welfare remains a top priority, stressing that the government is determined to provide all necessary support to ensure that Corps Members can serve effectively while benefiting from skill development opportunities and personal growth. The upgraded camp is expected to include modern accommodation facilities, improved classrooms, recreational spaces, and better utility services, aimed at fostering a more comfortable and productive environment for Corps Members. Analysts have noted that the initiative could serve as a model for other states, highlighting how investment in youth-focused infrastructure can contribute to national development while providing young Nigerians with practical skills and exposure. Governor Fubara’s approval of the camp upgrade aligns with his broader vision of youth empowerment and economic inclusion in Rivers State. By prioritizing both welfare and skills development, the state government is positioning NYSC service as not just a statutory obligation, but also as a platform for personal growth, entrepreneurship, and sustainable community development. With these upgrades, Rivers State is expected to set a new standard for NYSC camps nationwide, demonstrating that investment in youth infrastructure and welfare is crucial for maximizing the potential of Nigeria’s young population. The state government has assured that the implementation of the project will begin promptly, with completion targeted in time for the next batch of Corps Members, promising a safer, more comfortable, and enriching orientation experience for all.
