Prosecute Perpetrators of Attacks on Christian Communities, Italy’s Prime Minister Urges Nigeria
Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, has called on the Nigerian government to take firm and immediate action against those responsible for recent attacks on Christian communities across the country, describing the violence as unacceptable and deeply troubling.
Meloni, in a statement issued from Rome, condemned the renewed wave of killings and abductions targeting Christians in parts of Nigeria. She stressed that religious freedom is an “inviolable right”, insisting that no group should live in fear because of their faith. Her remarks follow reports of deadly assaults, including an attack on a church in Eruku, Kwara State, where gunmen killed worshippers and abducted several victims, and the recent kidnapping of schoolgirls in Kebbi State.
The Italian leader expressed solidarity with affected families and communities, saying Italy “stands close to all victims who today feel in danger because of their religious beliefs.” She urged Nigeria’s Federal Government to prosecute the perpetrators and strengthen protective measures for vulnerable religious groups.
Her intervention adds to growing international scrutiny surrounding violence against Christians in Nigeria. With foreign governments—most recently the United States—raising concerns about religiously targeted attacks, Meloni’s message reinforces pressure on Abuja to intensify security responses and pursue justice for victims.
While the Nigerian government has not formally responded to her remarks, the call from Italy underscores a rising global expectation for Nigeria to confront security challenges more decisively, especially where attacks appear to target communities based on their religious identity.
More reactions are expected as diplomatic and human rights circles digest Italy’s strong stance on Nigeria’s internal security situation.
