APC National Secretary Basiru Drops Out of Osun 2026 Governorship Race

In a surprising development ahead of the 2026 Osun State governorship election, Ajibola Basiru, the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Secretary, has officially withdrawn from the race.

Basiru made the announcement during the commissioning of the Alubarika Movement House in Alekuwodo, Osogbo, citing his national responsibilities as the primary reason for stepping aside. Speaking at the event, Basiru explained that his role as APC National Secretary requires full attention, noting that he had consulted party leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, before making the decision. “This is not a withdrawal from public service or political engagement,” he said, emphasizing his commitment to strengthening the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections. Basiru also pledged continued support for emerging APC leaders in Osun and across the country. As part of his political engagement, he announced a ₦50 million seed grant for initiatives under the Alubarika Movement, which is set to serve as a political and empowerment platform. Despite stepping aside, Basiru expressed confidence in the APC’s chances in Osun, asserting that the party remains “too formidable to be defeated” by the incumbent, Governor Ademola Adeleke. Basiru’s exit comes after months of speculation. Earlier this year, he denied rumors of quitting the race, stressing that his ambition remained intact. He had also publicly opposed the idea of zoning the APC governorship ticket, arguing that competence, rather than geographic considerations, should guide the selection of candidates. Political observers note that Basiru’s withdrawal may represent a strategic retreat, positioning him as a key influencer within the party while avoiding potential divisions in the APC ahead of a crucial election. With his continued involvement through the Alubarika Movement, Basiru remains a significant force in Osun politics, even outside the gubernatorial contest.
