Citing National Security Concerns, Cross River Cancels 2025 Agbokim Waterfalls Marathon

The Cross River State Government has called off the 2025 edition of the Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon, citing rising security concerns across the country.

Governor Bassey Otu announced the cancellation on Thursday via his X handle, stating that the decision followed a thorough assessment of the prevailing security situation and prioritised the safety of participants, visitors, and the general public.

“After a careful review of the prevailing security situation across the country, I have directed the cancellation of the 2025 Agbokim Waterfalls Green Marathon,” the governor said. “This decision was not easy, given the passion and planning the event inspires each year. However, the safety of our people, athletes, and visitors must always come first.”

Otu apologised for any inconvenience caused to organisers, partners, and participants, assuring that future editions of the marathon would return “stronger, safer, and better organised” with the state government’s full support.

The second edition of the 42km eco-tourism race, originally scheduled for Saturday, November 22, 2025, at the scenic Agbokim Waterfalls in Etung Local Government Area, was expected to attract athletes, tourists, and cultural enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond.

The governor reaffirmed the state’s commitment to promoting Cross River as a peaceful and attractive tourist destination, stressing that responsible decisions are essential to safeguard lives while showcasing the state on a global platform

The cancellation comes amid escalating violence in Nigeria, including a recent attack on the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State, where gunmen killed at least two worshippers and abducted the pastor and several congregants during an evening service on November 18.
