Tinubu Abandons G20, AU-EU Trips to Focus on Security in Kwara, Kebbi States

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has postponed his planned trips to South Africa and Angola to attend the 20th G20 Summit and the 7th AU-EU Summit, citing the need for further briefings on pressing security challenges in Kwara and Kebbi states.

The President’s decision comes in the wake of two recent incidents: the abduction of 24 schoolgirls in Kebbi State and an attack on worshippers at the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Kwara State. Both events have heightened concerns over the nation’s security situation.

In response to a request from the Kwara State governor, President Tinubu has directed the deployment of additional military and police personnel to Eruku and the wider Ekiti Local Government Area to protect residents and pursue the bandits responsible for the attack on the church.

The President is awaiting updates from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who recently visited Kebbi on his behalf to assess the situation, as well as reports from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services regarding the church attack.

President Tinubu emphasized that the security agencies must do everything within their power to rescue the kidnapped schoolgirls and ensure their safe return.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the development in an official statement issued on Tuesday, November 19, 2025.

The postponement underscores the administration’s focus on domestic security issues at a time when violent attacks and abductions continue to raise concerns across several states in Nigeria.
