Taraba Governor Puts Planned Defection to APC on Hold Over Kebbi Schoolgirls’ Abduction

Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, has placed his planned move to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on hold indefinitely, citing the recent abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State as the reason for the decision.

In a statement on Tuesday, Governor Kefas said it would be inappropriate to proceed with any major political event at a time when the nation is grappling with yet another tragic case of insecurity.

He noted that compassion and national solidarity must take precedence over political activities.

Kefas explained that his administration is committed to strengthening security, improving education, and safeguarding vulnerable groups, stressing that proceeding with his defection ceremony would be insensitive under the current circumstances.

“In view of the distressing kidnapping of innocent schoolgirls in Kebbi State, I have made the solemn decision to postpone my official declaration and entry into the All Progressives Congress,” he said.

According to him, the wellbeing of children—whom he described as the nation’s most valuable and fragile population—should outweigh any form of political celebration.

He added that the incident in Kebbi State had further underscored the urgency of addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.

“My thoughts are with the families of the abducted students, the government and people of Kebbi State, and with every Nigerian who feels the pain of this tragedy, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he said.

The governor called for intensified security efforts to ensure the safe return of the abducted girls and urged citizens to remain prayerful and vigilant during this difficult period.

“This is not a time for festivities. It is a time for sober reflection, prayers, unity, and coordinated action,” he added, assuring that a new date for his political transition would be announced after due consultations and when conditions are considered appropriate.

Governor Kefas had earlier disclosed his intention to join the APC and was scheduled to be formally welcomed into the party on Wednesday before the sudden postponement.
