Share in Waste Management Responsibilities as Pressures Rise, Lagos Govt Tells Residents

The Lagos State Government has called on residents to take greater responsibility for managing waste, warning that the city’s mounting refuse challenge cannot be resolved without collective action.

The appeal formed part of the 2025 Environmental Bees Club Members and Handlers’ Sensitisation Programme held in Alausa, Ikeja.

The Ministry of Environment and Water Resources disclosed the details on Monday through its spokesperson, Kunle Adeshina.

The reminder comes as reports of accumulating refuse emerge from several parts of the state — a situation authorities attribute to indiscriminate dumping and the refusal of some households to pay for waste evacuation.

Speaking at the programme, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Environmental Services, Dr Tajudeen Gaji — represented by the Director of the Environmental Education Unit, Monsurat Banire — said the government is pushing ahead with reforms designed to improve environmental sustainability.

“The state government remains dedicated to implementing policies that promote environmental sustainability, including waste management reforms,” he said.

Gaji stressed that the participation of students, teachers, parents and community groups is essential to the success of those efforts.

“The success of these efforts depends on the involvement of students, teachers, parents, and local communities,” he added.

He noted that the Environmental Bees Club exemplifies the government’s strategy of grooming students as environmental ambassadors through practical projects and learning activities.

Gaji also pointed to ongoing investments in green infrastructure, renewable energy initiatives and public awareness campaigns, describing them as critical pillars in Lagos’ drive for a cleaner, healthier city.

He told participants that the knowledge acquired through the sensitisation programme would help shape long-term solutions to environmental challenges.

During the event, the Deputy Director of Environmental Assessment, Dr Lasisi Adedoyin, delivered a lecture on building a healthy and sustainable environment.

The programme ended with the presentation of awards to students who excelled during the training sessions.
