Scotland Humble Denmark as Spain, Austria Qualify for World Cup
Scotland will play in the World Cup for the first time in 28 years after scoring two injury-time goals to seal a dramatic 4–2 victory over Denmark on Tuesday at Hampden Park.
Scott McTominay opened the scoring in the 3rd minute with a stunning overhead kick, and although Rasmus Højlund equalized from the penalty spot, a red card for Rasmus Kristensen left Denmark with 10 men. Lawrence Shankland put Scotland back in front in the 78th minute, before Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean struck in stoppage time to complete the memorable win. Denmark, who only needed a draw, will now face the playoff route to reach the World Cup Spain also booked their place at the 2026 finals after a 2–2 draw with Turkey in Seville. Dani Olmo gave Spain an early lead, but Turkey responded with goals from Deniz Gül and Salih Özcan before Mikel Oyarzabal equalized to secure Spain’s top spot in the group and their 17th consecutive World Cup appearance Austria confirmed their return to the World Cup for the first time since 1998 following a 1–1 draw against Bosnia & Herzegovina. Haris Tabaković gave Bosnia an early lead, but Michael Gregoritsch’s 77th-minute equalizer ensured Austria’s qualification. Bosnia, finishing second in the group, will now compete in the playoffs in March 2026.
