Storm Claudia Triggers Flooding, Evacuations as River Dulas Hits Record Level
Communities across Birmingham and Herefordshire experienced severe weather disruptions after Storm Claudia swept through the region, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds and widespread flooding.
Fallen trees blocked several routes, while emergency services responded to multiple distress calls overnight.
Authorities confirmed that water levels along the River Dulas rose sharply, reaching a record height of 2.88 metres, a surge that prompted urgent flood alerts in nearby communities.
Residents in at-risk areas were advised to move to higher ground as emergency evacuations were issued in parts of the county.
The storm’s impact extended to transportation networks, with reports of road closures and delays caused by submerged pathways and debris from fallen trees. Local councils in both Birmingham and Herefordshire urged motorists to avoid non-essential travel, warning that several routes remained unsafe due to fast-moving floodwaters.
While weather officials continue to monitor river levels, emergency teams have been deployed to clear blocked roads, support displaced families and assess infrastructural damage.
More rainfall is expected in some areas, raising concerns about further rises in water levels.
Residents have been encouraged to follow official advisories and stay updated on local alerts as authorities work to restore normalcy in the aftermath of the storm.
