Ex-Kaduna Governor Ahmed Makarfi Resigns As PDP BoT Secretary

The former Governor of Kaduna State and Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Ahmed Makarfi, has officially resigned from his position, citing zoning considerations and the emergence of a new National Chairman from his geopolitical zone as reasons for stepping down

In a resignation letter dated November 17, 2025, addressed to PDP BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, Makarfi recalled that his decision comes barely two months after he first attempted to resign via the BoT’s WhatsApp platform. That earlier resignation, he explained, was temporarily suspended at the request of the BoT leadership. "You may recall that about two months ago, I had resigned as Secretary of the Board and posted same on the Board’s WhatsApp platform,” Makarfi wrote. He added that Wabara intervened at the time, urging him to continue in office until the party concluded its national convention and produced a substantive National Chairman. “Mr. Chairman, you may recall that you personally urged me to stay on until after a convention that produced a Chairman,” he stated Makarfi’s resignation coincides with a factional shake-up within the PDP, as the Wike-led faction recently dissolved the existing BoT, citing loss of moral authority and political neutrality. The faction subsequently appointed Senator Mao Ohuabunwa as the new BoT Chairman and Hon. Isah Dansidi as Secretary, replacing Makarfi. Political analysts suggest the development reflects a rebalancing of power within the PDP, with the Wike faction consolidating influence over the party’s BoT, which traditionally serves as the party’s moral and strategic guide. Observers also note that Makarfi’s departure may reduce his influence within the party as it prepares for upcoming national elections. The resignation further underscores the growing divisions within the PDP, raising questions about the party’s ability to present a united front ahead of critical political contests.
