Proposed Iragbiji Marine College Aligns With Nigeria’s Blue Economy Vision, Says Oyetola

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has announced that the proposed School of Fishery and Marine College to be sited in Iragbiji, Osun State, is fully aligned with Nigeria’s emerging Blue Economy framework, describing it as a strategic investment in the nation’s future.

Oyetola, who spoke during the 34th Iragbiji Day Celebration, said the institution would play a central role in training young Nigerians in fisheries, aquaculture, marine science and sustainable environmental management.

According to him, the college is designed to support the federal government’s goal of creating a skilled workforce capable of driving the country’s marine and aquatic resource sector.

He noted that the planned school is not just a local project but a national asset that will contribute directly to President Bola Tinubu’s economic diversification agenda.

The minister added that human capital development is at the heart of the Blue Economy initiative, and establishing such an institution would equip Nigerians with the technical knowledge required to maximise the country’s vast marine resources.

Oyetola described the college—alongside the newly established Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies (FUADSI) in Iragbiji—as a “generational blessing,” urging community members to support both projects to ensure long-term benefits.

He also appealed to residents and youths to channel their energy into education, skill development and opportunities offered through the emerging Blue Economy.

Recent assessments by a delegation from the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology have confirmed Iragbiji’s viability for hosting the new college.

The team expressed confidence that the area has the basic infrastructure needed to kickstart full academic programmes. The traditional ruler of Iragbiji, Oba Abdur-Rasheed Ayotunde Olabomi, also endorsed the project, calling for improved access roads to strengthen connectivity between the proposed college and FUADSI.

Oyetola reiterated that the initiative aligns with the ministry’s broader efforts to attract investment, boost innovation and promote sustainable use of aquatic resources.

He assured that the government remains committed to expanding opportunities within the marine and blue economy sector, positioning Nigeria for stronger economic growth and global competitiveness.
