Father Arrested Allegedly Sexually Abusing Daughters for 7 Years

A 54-year-old man, identified as Edward Ngozi Odega, has been taken into custody by the Delta State Police Command following allegations that he sexually abused his three daughters over a period of seven years.

The victims reported to be 13, 15 and 24 years old came forward during a recent community police outreach, prompting officers to open an investigation and detain the suspect.

Police sources say one of the children disclosed the abuse during the outreach exercise, an account that reportedly led to the immediate arrest of Odega at his residence.

Authorities have since commenced medical examinations for the girls and are collating statements from neighbours, school officials and others who may have relevant information. Investigators intend to press charges in line with provisions of Nigeria’s criminal law dealing with defilement and incest, officials added.

Law enforcement spokespeople stressed the difficulty of detecting long-term familial abuse, noting that many victims stay silent out of fear, shame or coercion.

The Delta police command has urged anyone with information about the case to come forward to assist with evidence gathering.

Local child-protection groups and health workers were reported to be supporting the immediate care needs of the youngsters while the criminal probe continues.

Community reactions have been of shock and outrage. Neighbours and local leaders described the allegations as “disturbing,” and called for a thorough prosecution should the claims be substantiated.

Advocacy organisations say the incident underlines the need for improved education on signs of abuse, stronger reporting channels, and better resourcing of social services that can offer victims safe spaces and counselling.

This arrest is the latest in a spate of high-profile family-abuse revelations across Nigeria and elsewhere that have drawn attention to systemic barriers survivors face when seeking help.

Police have assured the public that the matter will be fast-tracked through the justice system and that they will safeguard the identities and wellbeing of the victims as the case proceeds.

Further updates will be provided as investigators release more information.
